Vibration limits: Is there a consensus?

An experienced reliability manager recently asked our opinion on the subject of turbomachinery vibration. He and his staff had been discussing the vibratory behavior and applicable settings on one of the refinery's older (1940s vintage) turbine generators. At the time of our recent communication, these values were set at peak-to-peak shaft displacements of 3.0 mils (alarm), 4.5 mils (danger) and 6.0 mils (trip). As we all know, a "mil" equals 0.001 in., or 25 micrometers, and these values are with reference to the machine casing.
