SIL assessment is the process of selecting the appropriate risk-reduction factor required for the SIS to achieve an acceptable risk level.
Qualitative and quantitative analyses are used to assign the SIL to the identified risk. Qualitative analysis is on personal experience/judgment/ past history of similar plant, whereas quantitative qnalyses is a systematic development of numerical estimates of expected frequency and/or consequences of potential accidents. Different methods such as risk matrix, LOPA, event tree, fault tree and risk graph are used for SIL assessment.
