Liquefied natural gas (LNG) vaporization using fired heaters can consume up to 1.8% of the terminal throughput. Utilizing ambient air as the heat source for LNG vaporization reduces fuel gas consumption and air emissions significantly. In world geographical locations where sea water or fired heating is not allowed due to environmental concerns, using air-based technologies may be the only option. After extensive studies of techno-economical and environmental aspects, Freeport LNG selected heating-tower vaporization technology for its 10.8 million tons/year (MMtpy) terminal at Quintana Island, Texas. The terminal successfully started up in June 2008.
