Methanex to relocate Chile methanol plant to US

02.07.2012  |  HP News

The company picked Jacobs for engineering services on the project, which it hopes to start up at the new site in 2014.

Jacobs Engineering Group said it was awarded a contract from Canada-based methanol major Methanex to provide engineering services for a potential methanol production facility in Louisiana.

The plant would be relocated from Chile (where it is idled now) to Louisiana, with Methanex seeking to start operations in the second half of 2014.

“The outlook for low North American natural-gas prices makes Louisiana an attractive location," said Methanex CEO Bruce Aitken.

Jacobs is currently executing site-specific engineering for the 225-acre location in Geismar, La. from its offices in Baton Rouge, La.; Santiago, Chile; and Marble Arch, London, UK.

The project is expected to create numerous direct and indirect job employment opportunities, the companies said.

"We are very pleased Methanex selected Jacobs to be a part of this project,” said Jacobs vice president Mike Autrey.

“The US Gulf Coast is a prime location for a methanol facility, especially since demand for methanol is expected to grow in the coming years,” he added.

Financial terms and capacity information were not disclosed.
