Non-fragmenting reverse-buckling disc for gas or liquid applications


The PRO+KRGL reverse-buckling rupture disc for gas or liquid applications is claimed to provide a best-in-class Kr value (which determines the frictional flow loss through a rupture disc and holder) for improved flow, enabling the use of smaller piping. The disc can be used in safety-relief valve isolation, primary pressure relief or in conjunction with a safety-relief valve as secondary pressure relief.

Off-the-shelf valve-actuator package provides a compact automation solution


The ValvXpress off-the-shelf valve-mounting kit and actuator package is said to meet the demand for high quality and quick delivery in severe-service water and steam applications. The package has proven sealing under operating conditions up to 1,400°F (760°C). ValvXpress is equipped with metal-seated ball valves ranging from ½ in. to 2½ in.; A105, F22 and F91 body materials; and it meets the needs of ANSI Class 2500 and 4500 valves. The product also provides a high-cycle actuator and mounting hardware, along with an internal valve-stem stop and a drive retainer, preventing the stem from being driven into the ball.

Carbon-steel valve and manifold solutions for industrial-instrumentation applications

Hand valves and two-, three- and five-valve manifolds in carbon steel (a more economical material than stainless steel) have been developed by Parker’s Instrumentation Products Division. The new series is said to provide an ideal solution for natural-gas transmission lines, along with other chemical/petrochemical and power industrial-instrumentation applications that don’t require the extreme performance of stainless steel.

The carbon-steel hand valves and manifolds are pressure-rated up to 6,000 psig (414 bar) to provide system flexibility when selecting process valves for an assortment of applications. They work with Parker’s industry-leading A-LOK and CPI fittings, as well as other manufacturers’products. An external adjustable gland enables full stem-packing adjustment without removing the valve from the system. Handles are color-coded to quickly and easily identify valve functions—including test/drain, equalize and isolate—thereby avoiding errors and increasing safety. Cost-effective alternative to traditional high-temperature insulation

Superwool HT felt and Superwool HT millboard are said to be ideal for fabricating gaskets and heat shields for industrial appliances. The lightweight, multipurpose products are available in a full range of sizes, thicknesses and densities. Superwool fiber has been developed to provide the improved high-temperature characteristics required to act as an alternative to traditional refractory ceramic fiber (RCF) insulation.

The multipurpose lightweight insulating felt is made from Superwool HT fibers, reportedly the only low bio-persistent fiber available with a classification temperature of 2,372°F (1,300°C). Superwool HT felt can replace traditional RCF-based felts in applications such as expansion joints in kilns, furnaces and boiler walls, and in high-temperature gaskets.

The millboard is a rigid composite board made from Superwool fibers, an assortment of refractory fillers, and organic and inorganic binders. Mercaptan injection confirmed with high-resolution meters


Telltale warnings can save lives. The first line of defense to the safe use of natural gas is an effective odorization program. This program should constantly monitor the gas flow, compute and inject the proper odorant dosage, and, most importantly, record this activity.

Typically, state regulations dictate the minimum odorant concentration. Since these odorants—Di-Methyl Di-Sulfide being the most common—are expensive, there are economic concerns regarding excessive dosing.

The odor threshold of mercaptans is approximately one part per billion. Typical mercaptan doses are in the range of 2–4 ppm (by volume, to gas); this translates to about 1–200 cc/min., depending on pipeline size and natural-gas velocity.

Sophisticated flow-monitoring equipment is essential to ensure proper dosing. Low-flow accuracy and repeatability are required, as well as easily integrated (via computer, PC and/or telemetry interface) signals.

The MAX-213 meter is used when the minimum dosage rate (averaged out on an instantaneous basis) falls below 40 cc/min.; the 214 meter is used when the minimum rate is over 40 cc/min. or the maximum rate is over 1,500 cc/min. Typical applications are either in the 1–10 cc/min. or in the 50–200-cc/min. ranges. A solid-state transmitter is required because of low flow and sudden on/off conditions usually associated with mercaptan injections (since plunger-type pumps typically are used, intermittent and/or pulsating flowrates are the rule). Stainless-steel enclosures carry IP66 rating


VC4X and VH4X stainless-steel enclosures feature a continuous one-piece silicone gasket that provides an IP66 ingress rating for dust-tight and water-tight locations. Available in 304 or 316L stainless steel, the enclosures include standard lift-off door hinges, allowing easy cover removal. The standard quarter-turn door latches are designed with security in mind and include a double-bit insert. Mounting feet can be oriented in either horizontal/vertical directions, and an internal/external earth stud is included as standard.

Hydrofoil mixing impeller blade and hub design promotes efficiency


HYFLO impellers provide a four-blade design that is reportedly 10% more efficient than a three-blade design and runs with greater stability. Featuring impeller geometries that are matched to customer mixing-speed and application requirements, these hydrofoil mixer blades are welded to the hub, in a one-piece or split-hub arrangement. This keeps the top of the impeller clean to optimize flow and mixing efficiency.

Providing high blade strength and reliability by gusseting the impeller rather than increasing blade thickness, the manufacturer claims that HYFLO impellers have been tested through CFD modeling against numerous leading hydrofoil-impeller designs, and they have consistently provided the most flow for the least power. High-efficiency energy-saving hydraulic fluid field testing underway


SANY Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of engineering machinery, is conducting a field test with the SANY new fluid formulated with DYNAVIS technology developed by Evonik Oil Additives to validate its exceptional performance in fuel savings and productivity improvements. SANY hydraulic fluid, incorporating DYNAVIS technology, has promising initial test results. In a pre-test of the fluid, the SANY excavator operator was quick to notice the increased equipment power when compared to a non-SANY-DYNAVIS fluid control.

Hydraulic fluids formulated with DYNAVIS technology enjoy a broader temperature operating range and thereby improve equipment productivity and fuel efficiency. At higher temperatures, hydraulic fluids formulated with DYNAVIS technology help reduce a pump’s internal leakage and a hydraulic fluid’s ability to lubricate is retained. As a result, power output is higher, fuel consumption goes down and the equipment is more responsive to operator controls. Gas monitor and controller combination provides versatility and cost-effectiveness


iTrans fixed-gas monitors are now fully compatible with WX series controllers This new compatibility makes the WX-iTrans combination even more versatile and cost-effective. Software improves vigilance of plant safe operating limits and exposes vulnerabilities

Safe operating limit information is maintained by various groups within the plant and is not readily available to operators. Thus, operators are generally unaware of the design and safety limitations of the processes they operate. inBound is a layered application for PAS’ market-leading PlantState Suite alarm management software. It aggregates, validates and displays physical constraints such as a vessel’s maximum allowable working pressure and design constraints, such as relief-valve settings and safe operating limits. These constraints may be manually entered, calculated or imported into inBound from engineering applications and databases.

inBound enables development of a boundary hierarchy and automatically detects and reports deviations from that hierarchy. This capability provides assurance that configuration parameter changes, such as alarm limits and instrument ranges, remain within the plant’s safe operating envelope.

Precision fluidized bath series


The FFB-8 series is claimed to offer a wide operating range of 50ºC to 700°C (122ºF to 1,292°F), PID temperature control and a built-in dust-extraction and collection system. Model FFB-8 uses the principle of fluidization of a mass of finely divided particles to provide a safe, essentially isothermal environment with a high rate of heat transfer. This CE-compliant product is nonabrasive to any devices or parts put into the bath, including highly polished items.

The FFB-8 series is said to be a safer and cleaner alternative to conventional liquid systems and volatile salt baths, as well as more efficient with a fast recovery time after the bath is quenched. This unit is suitable for many applications, including thermal testing of sensitive components, such as wire products and delicate transducers. Low-power portable flowmeters for fieldwork and in-house testing applications


The MB series of portable mass flow and liquid flowmeters uses a 9-volt battery pack to make metering gas flow, pressure or water flow in the field and lab convenient and reliable. With eight to 10 hours of battery life, the flowmeters quickly and accurately measure pressure, temperature and volumetric flow in addition to mass flow. Stainless-steel coalescing filter removes oil particles from hydrocarbon gas or air


A stainless-steel coalescing filter protects sensitive equipment by removing oil from compressed hydrocarbon gas or compressed air used to power operations in corrosive environments such as refineries and chemical plants. The F22H is constructed of 316 stainless steel and its metallic parts meet NACE Standard MR-01-75, resisting sulfide stress cracking and discoloration in corrosive environments.

The ½-in. ported filter is designed with a large convoluted filter element, creating a large surface area to deliver high flow with minimal pressure drop. The filter has a stainless-steel manual drain. It is also available with an automatic drain that opens when a specified liquid level is attained, making it especially well suited for unmanned satellite platforms.

The F22H coalescing filter’s maintenance cycle is extended when used as part of Norgren’s three-stage filtration system. Two general-purpose filters placed upstream remove water and particles of 25 microns and then 5 microns before they can contaminate the coalescing oil-removal element. The three-stage system comes with brackets for panel mounting to fit into a compact footprint. Static motor-analysis equipment provides broad functionality

SKF Static Motor Analyzer–Baker DX models, which will replace the older-generation Baker D-series and ST series surge-test analyzers, reportedly perform motor and generator analysis faster and more accurately than previous generation models. The new instruments are said to efficiently and accurately identify potential problems with motors and generators to prevent breakdowns.

These analyzers now include low-voltage inductance, impedance, phase angle and capacitance, coil and DC step voltage tests in a smaller, lighter-weight portable unit. Like their predecessors, these analyzers also conduct winding resistance, megohm, DC HiPot, surge tests and DC bar-to-bar armature tests. All units come with a more intuitive, easy-to-navigate touch-screen graphical user interface, and can be ordered in an array of configurations.

Baker DX series analyzers can perform motor tests from 4 kV to 40 kV (with an optional power pack), and can be configured with customer-specified test functions.
