CB&Is Lummus Technology business unit successfully commissioned the delayed coking unit (DCU) for Essar Oils Vadinar refinery expansion project in Gujarat, India, the companies said on Friday.
The Vadinar refinery increased its capacity to 20 million tpy or 405,000 bpd, up from 10.5 million tpy and 200,000 bpd previously.
The expansion and enhancements allow Vadinar to process a much greater proportion of lower cost, heavy and ultra-heavy crude oils.
Vadinar is the second largest, single-location refinery in India and has increased from 6.1 to 11.8 on Nelsons complexity factor, including it among the most complex refineries in the world.
The entire unit - constructed by Essar Projects (India) - was completed on an EPC basis and took 30 months to commissioning.
The DCU - one of the largest in the world - enables the Vadinar refinery to process challenging and heavy crude slates by converting the residual oil from the vacuum unit to higher value distillate products, such as gasoline, diesel and heavy gas oil.
The solid petroleum coke by-product may also be used in the cement industry or power generation.
Lummus Technology provided the basic engineering, proprietary heater design and material supply, pre-commissioning, commissioning, training and start-up services.
CB&Is project engineering and construction business performed the detailed design for the coking section, including the coke drum structure.
