The biofuels commercially available to refiners have long been limited to ethanol and biodiesel. These fuels offer the benefits of being readily produced from a variety of commercial feedstocks by well-established technologies. Given growing demand for biofuels, driven by government policy and economics, considerable attention is being paid to commercialize technologies that expand the range of applicable feedstocks to include lignocellulosic materials. This is being done to increase the potential supply and, ultimately, to lower costs.
