Sasol to use Univation PE process technology on Louisiana liquids project

The 450,000 tpy linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) swing polyethylene plant will be capable of producing a broad product portfolio, the company says, including metallocene LLDPE. Univation is a joint venture comprised of Dow Chemical and ExxonMobil.

Sasol has chosen the UNIPOL PE process technology of Univation Technologies for its petrochemical project in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the companies confirmed on Tuesday.

The 450,000 tpy linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) swing polyethylene plant will be capable of producing a broad product portfolio, the company says, including metallocene LLDPE. 

Univation is a joint venture comprised of Dow Chemical and ExxonMobil.

“We are very excited that Sasol has chosen Univation’s UNIPOL PE process to be part of its Lake Charles mega-project in Louisiana and equally proud to be part of Sasol’s strategic North American growth complex based on advantaged feedstocks,” said Cindy Shulman, president of Univation Technologies.

This is the second UNIPOL PE process plant for Sasol and its affiliates. The first one has been in operation in Sasolburg, South Africa since 1983.

“After nearly 30 years of operating a UNIPOL PE plant in South Africa, Sasol has a long-standing relationship with Univation, and Sasol is looking forward to expanding its product portfolio to include latest generation Univation metallocene technologies,” said Mike Biesheuvel, managing director of Sasol Polymers.

The broad product portfolio and the flexibility of the UNIPOL PE process will serve Sasol’s long term market needs both domestically as well as in export markets, according to the company.

In December, Sasol announced plans to move forward with the front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase for an integrated gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility and world-scale ethane cracker at Lake Charles.
