LIMA -- Kuntur Transportadora de Gas SAC, a unit of Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht, said it is evaluating taking part in a government run project to build a pipeline for natural gas to southern Peru.

Kuntur representative Marko Harasic told the Peruvian securities regulatory agency that there may be synergies by having Kuntur take part in the government run Southern Peruvian Gas Pipeline, or GSP, which will be auctioned off by privatization agency, ProInversion.

Kuntur has proposed building its own 1,000 km long pipeline in southern Peru, called the Southern Andean Gas Pipeline, but that project has stalled as the company waits for approval of a contract modification from the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The Peruvian government withdrew funding guarantees for that project and instead proposed its own project, saying that building a pipeline to transport natural gas from Peru's southeastern jungle region to the Pacific coast is key to the country's energy security, and could also be used to develop a petrochemical complex.
