Micro Motion releases new metering products at Emerson Exchange

GRAPEVINE, Texas -- Emerson Process Management hosted a breakfast for press members on Tuesday during the company’s yearly Exchange for customers, end users and the media. Over coffee, scrambled eggs and French toast, Micro Motion executives discussed and displayed an array of new devices.


Compact density meter.
The upgraded multi-variable density meter is designed for the custody transfer metering of crude oil, refined hydrocarbons, alcohols and many aggressive process liquids. The meter combines multivariable digital technology and a high speed signal processing technology with an optimized meter design that allows for sustained performance under varying process and external environments. This is achieved via innovative compensation techniques where the compact density meter measures both the fluid temperature and its own meter case temperature. This information is then used to minimize any measurement errors due to changes in environmental conditions. The compact density meter is the first online density meter to offer this unique functionality and address this known effect which allows it to deliver improved measurement performance in harsh environments.

Multivariable digital technology further enhances the design of Micro Motion’s compact density meter by incorporating the unique feature of fluid flow rate indication. Fluid flow rate indication allows users to have confidence in their density measurement and diagnose installation problems such as product build up or tube blockages prior to significant errors occurring.

Every meter calibration is traceable and accredited to ISO17025 and covers both density and temperature measurements which minimizes the need for external field devices. It conforms to fiscal and custody transfer industry best practice standards with direct communication to either flow computers or distributed control systems (DCS) supported.

The meter’s transmitter module can output sensor data in four formats simultaneously including: Sensor frequency (time period), 4-20mA, HART and RS485 Modbus. This allows users to view meter health and performance indicators while using a frequency signal output when it’s connected to a flow computer. Previously unavailable in on-line density meter devices, this new technology provides diagnostic information in critical density measurement applications which can result in significant reductions in maintenance costs and cycle times.


Gas density meter. Today also marked the release of the Micro Motion gas density meter, the next generation of the Micro Motion 7812 gas density meter designed for natural gas custody transfer, refinery/fuel gas measurement, hydrogen purity monitoring and many other process gas applications.

In applications where the ultimate in real-world measurement performance is required, this gas density meter is the ideal choice to solve problems that users confront on a daily basis such as reducing custody transfer gain/loss errors, inefficient hydrogen cooling of turbines or reduced steam heat and reliability from fired heaters. It uses Ni-span C vibrating cylinder technology that is optimized to ensure performance under varying process and environmental conditions. The meter’s measurement quality is complemented by a new, automated calibration facility. Calibrations are traceable to national standards with an optional IEC/ISO17025 accreditation that ensures compliance to the most stringent custody transfer requirements.

The gas density meter now incorporates a head-mounted transmitter that has the flexibility to digitally connect to distributed control systems as well as the ability to output raw sensor signals to flow computers - conforming to custody transfer best practices. This new transmitter module has the unique capability of being able to output sensor data in four formats simultaneously - sensor frequency (time period), 4-20mA, HART and RS485 Modbus. This allows the user to view meter health and performance indicators in applications where this information was previously unavailable, such as in custody transfer.

It also incorporates a new diagnostic capability called “known density verification” that checks the meter for measurement alarm conditions, sensor integrity and the presence of coating, erosion or corrosion. This expands the availability of diagnostics information in critical density measurement applications and can result in significant reductions in maintenance costs and cycle times.


Gas specific gravity meter. The final product launch discussed Tuesday morning was Emerson Process Management’s Micro Motion specific gravity meter, the next generation of the Micro Motion 3098 gas specific gravity meter designed for custody transfer, refinery/fuel gas energy measurement, hydrogen purity control and many other process gas applications.

In applications where fast response, direct gas measurement is required, the Micro Motion Gas Specific Gravity Meter helps to solve the problems that users confront on a daily basis, such as managing rapidly changing fired heater air-to-fuel ratios, reducing refinery hydrogen impurities and minimizing windage losses in hydrogen-cooled generator sets.

This meter directly measures gas molecular weight and can be configured to output hydrogen purity, specific gravity, relative density, calorific value/BTU or Wobbe Index. Building upon Micro Motion’s Ni-span-C cylinder technology, this precision measurement technology provides the benefits of low cost of ownership, reduced maintenance costs and a new innovative integral transmitter.

The specific gravity meter now incorporates a head-mounted transmitter that has the flexibility to digitally connect to distributed control systems as well as the ability to output raw sensor signals to flow computers - conforming to custody transfer best practices. This innovative new transmitter module has the unique capability of being able to output sensor data in four formats simultaneously - sensor frequency (time period), 4-20mA, HART and RS485 Modbus. The gas specific gravity meter also utilizes the previously discussed “known density verification".
