Advanced process control (APC) offers solutions to use full catalyst regenerator capacity safely and to generate substantial benefits. Significant yield increases and operating cost reductions can be delivered through a successful APC installation. In this case history, the process knowledge and technical know-how of a technology provider formed a solid foundation for an APC application to the continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) processes such as reforming and C5 isomerization at Sasol’s Secunda facility. In this application, two novel patented methods were applied: the APC philosophy applied to coke-rate control and the development of dynamic models from automatically generated step-test data.
