How do cyber threats affect petrochemical risk models?

Targeted cyber attacks are increasing, and the attackers’ methods are evolving to evade or circumnavigate existing countermeasures. To explore a threat-led risk model, the key elements must be examined.

The petroleum industry serves a vital role in the global economy, and, therefore, it must be vigilant on all operational levels. While increasing energy demand is a stable expectation for this industry, there are other evolving factors that demand attention and planning. The role of information technology (IT) has grown in this sector, as many industrial control systems (ICSs) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems have adopted traditional IT systems for ease of deployment, control, communications and maintenance. In addition to the new benefits, this marriage offers new exposures and risks—for better or for worse.
