PARSIPPANY (Bloomberg) -- PBF Energy plans to shut a hydrocracker for maintenance at its 175,000 bpd Toledo, Ohio, refinery on January 13, according to a person familiar with operations.

The maintenance, which includes catalyst refreshing and compressor work, is expected to last eight days and the 60,000 bpd unit will restart within 12 days, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information isn’t public.

The work was initially slated to start today but was delayed because of cold weather, said the person. A hydrocracker converts heavy fuel oil into lighter fuels like gasoline.

The Toledo refinery processes a slate of light, sweet crudes from Canada, the Midcontinent, the Bakken region and the United States Gulf Coast, according to the company’s website. The plant, which PBF acquired from Sunoco in March 2011, is located about 97 km south of Detroit.

Michael Karlovich, a PBF spokesman based in Parsippany, New Jersey, declined by e-mail to comment on the work.

“We treat operations and maintenance activities, including turnarounds, as business confidential information,” he said.
