Coal re-emerges as a primary petrochemical feedstock

04.01.2014  |  Velson, J.,  Nexant Consulting,

Coal-to-chemicals routes are now an important and viable option for producers in China and beyond. Those that look upon them as atavistic dinosaurs do so at their peril.

Keywords: [petrochemicals] [coal] [syngas] [MEG] [olefins] [methanol] [China] [PVC]

Coal was, historically, a critical resource in the infancy of the organic chemical industry. Among many other applications, coal tar provided aromatics, and coal syngas was used for ammonia and methanol production. The invention of the electric-arc furnace allowed coal-based calcium carbide to unleash a wealth of early acetylene-based production of butadiene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and acetaldehyde. While the modern petrochemical industry’s development largely shifted away from coal as cheaper feedstocks emerged, coal is once again re-emerging as a high-value hydrocarbon feedstock, as shown in Fig. 1.

Any such workability for Indian market?

I completely share the opinion in the article.
Besides China at todays hydrocarbon prices
this is real alternative for job creation in coal mining
and self sufficiency plus positive balance of paymnet and tax .
However the start is difficult hence I propose that experienced
consultants like Nexant should make first advise and pereliminary business plan teaser to mine owners at an out of the drawer base freely in order to obrtain money for the detailed
business plan elaboration. It would jhelp a faster spread of
the CTX technology

Is the U S A working on this technology? We need to still rely on coal for many years to come!
