Although it is the smallest Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member nation, both in terms of area and population, Qatar contains the third-largest proven reserves of natural gas in the world. Natural gas is sourced primarily from Qatar’s North field. With an estimated 900 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of recoverable gas reserves, the North field is the largest non-associated natural gas field in the world and represents roughly 10% of the world’s known reserves. With gas production reaching almost 6 Tcf in 2013, the country is the world’s fourth-largest producer of natural gas. This gas production has propelled the country to be the worldwide leader in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and gas-to-liquids (GTL) technologies. Continued large-scale natural gas production will play a key role in the future growth of Qatar’s downstream hydrocarbon assets.
