Stationary heat-transfer fluid systems are now available up to 700°F (371°C)

The HTF ST Series of stationary heat-transfer fluid systems, up to 600 kW, is now available up to 700°F (371°C). These systems are said to offer superior, energy-efficient performance for applications requiring higher heating capacities, and to provide numerous advantages over comparable systems that use steam. Benefits include cost savings, lower operating pressures, reduced energy consumption and safer operation.

Designed and built to customer specifications, the HTF ST Series features low-watt-density electric heating mounted on a structural steel frame. The product line is completely pre-wired and available in single- and multiple-zone configurations with pumping capacities up to 120 gpm.

Valves switch up to four times faster with pneumatic volume booster

With the high-precision 4090 pneumatic volume booster, it is reportedly possible to amplify the air strength of the setpoint signal from positioner to actuator in such a way that control valves—depending on nominal valve size—operate up to four times faster without any further modification. A diaphragm system increases the pressure and volumetric flow of the control air by up to 6 bar through the controlled insertion of supply air. In the volume booster, the control air is fed through an adjustable bypass to the actuator. By controlling the flowrate in the bypass, the switching threshold for activating the amplifying air can be controlled precisely. This ensures that the pneumatic volume booster applies the default amount of supply air to the actuator with small changes in pressure, i.e., small control interventions. When the adjustable bypass pressure threshold is exceeded, the pneumatic volume booster is activated and it releases the additional pressure amplification for the control air so that the valve stroke adjustment or, respectively, the part-turn actuator is substantially faster.

In actuator venting, the pneumatic volume booster adopts the same function and makes a vent valve operate when the supply air pressure is reduced. Fitting an exhaust air filter here minimizes sound emission.

The 4090 pneumatic volume booster reportedly reduces switching times both in the closing and opening of a valve. Using a DN 300 ball sector valve for a direct comparison, the closing time for a single-acting actuator falls from 43 seconds to 21.5 seconds with a standard setting, and to just 10 seconds with an “aggressive” bypass setting on the booster. This pneumatic volume booster not only shortens switching times significantly, but it also optimizes the control quality, particularly for control valves in the larger nominal sizes. Magnet-drive liquid-ring pumps for demanding applications

The NASH 2BM1 Series of magnet-drive pumps is an enhancement to the dependable NASH 2BE1 Series; it is capable of achieving flowrates of 550 gpm to 1,3870 gpm (125 m3/hr to 3,150 m3/hr) and vacuum of 1-in. HgA (33 mbar abs). The pumps can also be used as low-pressure compressors. Noncontact torque transmission is achieved via a permanent magnet-drive system.

The pumps are hermetically sealed, eliminating any possibility of leakage. This seal is said to be essential for safety in demanding applications, including hazardous and explosive environmental conditions. Certificates of compliance with all ATEX categories are available for the NASH 2BM1 Series.

Porous components offered in a variety of refractory metals

Mott Corp.’s porous metal components and filters are available in various refractory metal alloys, including zirconium, titanium, tungsten, molybdenum and niobium. These refractory metals are known for outstanding chemical resistance, high strength and thermal stability. Porous components or entire filter assemblies can be designed using refractory metals to meet various flow control/filtration requirements, and to meet exacting tolerances and down to sub-micron particulate removal. With melting points from 2,400ºC to over 3,400ºC, porous components in refractory metals can meet the most demanding filtration or flow control requirements. In addition, refractory metals are electrically conductive and chemically inert, and can be a suitable material of construction for many applications where higher operating temperatures are critical.

Inspection reporting software makes dig sheet production easier than ever

A new proprietary inline inspection reporting software, Interactive Report 2013, has been designed with inline inspection (ILI) services customers in mind. This data visualization tool is claimed to make it easy for users to filter and view their pipeline inspection data, with the goal of helping them to more intuitively assess where problem areas exist.

“This software makes inspection data more accessible than ever before,” said Ron Lundstrom, supervisor of software engineering for TDW. “It features a very user-friendly Windows-based environment that makes it easy to choose from a variety of views, including interactive charts, graphs, tables, and even a three-dimensional pipe view.”

With the special “snapshot” feature, users can save customized views of potential trouble spots and share them with others for review or comment. Once the most critical anomalies have been identified, creating a dig sheet is an automated process.

Hydrogen-resistant carbon-monoxide sensor offered for multigas detectors

MSA’s hydrogen sulfide/carbon-monoxide (H2S/CO) hydrogen-resistant XCell sensor for ALTAIR 4X and ALTAIR 5X multigas detectors is reportedly ideal for monitoring CO in areas of likely hydrogen presence. The sensor provides ranges of 0 ppm to 200 ppm of H2S and 0 ppm to1,999 ppm of CO with 1-ppm resolution on both channels. The sensor offers identical performance to MSA’s standard H2S/CO two-tox sensor plus enhanced hydrogen resistance with industry-leading hydrogen < 5% cross-sensitivity. Fire-insulation product provides up to 30% weight savings

The FireMaster Marine PlusBlanket is a lightweight fire insulation that reportedly provides weight savings of up to 30% compared to standard FireMaster blanket and traditional mineral-fiber fire-insulation products. Through its weight savings, it can achieve improved fuel efficiency and faster speed, or even increase available cargo capacity. The product is also an excellent acoustic and thermal insulator.

Engineered to meet the most stringent performance requirements, the FireMaster Marine PlusBlanket provides both cellulosic and hydrocarbon fire protection. Certified systems include Class A steel and aluminum bulkheads and decks, high-speed craft constructions built from 2-mm aluminum plate, and 30 minute- and 60 minute-rated composite sandwich-panel bulkheads and decks.

In addition to being lighter than traditional mineral-wool insulation, FireMaster Marine PlusBlanket is easier to install. Available in rolls rather than sheets, the product can be installed in larger areas without having to make joints. When installed in conjunction with stiffeners, the flexible material can be profile-wrapped, improving performance and reducing installation costs.

BT ball-tipped sphere launcher improves bidirectional liquid prover 

WFMS Inc. has made a major improvement to its WFMS straight calibrated section (SCS) bidirectional liquid prover (patent applied for) with the introduction of BT ball-tipped launching chambers. The launching chambers are tipped to allow the sphere to easily launch into the pre-run and calibrated section without the use of a ramp. By tipping the horizontal launchers as little as 2º, the sphere returns to a position where it easily launches into the prover piping during proving, and at low water-draw flowrates during calibration in the shop and in the field. Eliminating the previously used launching ramp also reduces cost, and saves valuable time when cleaning the prover in preparation for future water draws.

The SCS prover is available in line sizes from 3 in. to 42 in., and ANSI flange ratings from ANSI 150 to ANSI 900.

Water draws in the shop and in the field by independent third parties have shown repeatability of 0.002% to 0.007% for WFMS, Inc.’s SCS provers. The sphere’s overinflation needs to be only 1%–2%.

Prover advantages include:

  • Lower-pressure drop due to prover ball overinflation of only 2%
  • Special alignment flanges are not required, thus reducing the cost of the SCS prover
  • Calibrated section can be rolled out and inspected without needing a water draw
  • Increasing the pipe size into and out of the launchers from the 4-way reduces the velocity and lowers pressure drop and damage to the ball
  • There are no alignment flanges or elbows in the calibrated section
  • Since the flow is not disrupted by the ball passing through elbows and flange sets, it is ideal for Coriolis and ultrasonic liquid meters with manufactured pulses
  • The flow through the calibrated section is smooth; thus, the pulses from conventional PD and turbines will be more evenly spaced, giving better proves, especially when pulse interpolation is used. WFMS Inc.

Pressure transducers receive international explosion-proof rating

Brooks Instrument has received International Electrotechnical Commission (IECEx) certification for its SolidSense II pressure transducers, confirming their suitability for use in hazardous environments regulated for explosions caused by flammable liquids, vapor, gases or combustible dust. The approval certifies that SolidSense II pressure transducers have been manufactured under systems subject to ongoing inspections by IECEx certification bodies, assuring buyers of continuous conformance to this independently established, worldwide standard.

This certification now makes it easier for engineers to spec SolidSense II pressure transducers into gas cabinets, gas panels, valve manifold boxes and distribution valve boxes. These are typically part of the processing and handling equipment found in industrial markets like oil and gas refineries, gas distribution facilities and chemical plants.

With full-scale pressure ranges from 0 psia–30 psia to 0 psig–3,000 psig and various electrical and mechanical options, the transducers are reportedly well suited to industrial applications that require highly reliable pressure measurement. Hastelloy version of the TCM Coriolis flowmeter

The 1-in. 28K TCM Coriolis flowmeter is the first in the TCM Coriolis flowmeter series to be made available in Hastelloy. More flowmeter sizes will follow this year. Designed with chemicals in mind, the new material is said to open a broader application range for this product family, including chemical injection, blending and batching, and chemical processing. The 28K flowmeter is extremely accurate and can go up to 5,000 psi with accuracies of 0.10% for liquid and 0.50% for gas. The flowmeter has ATEX Ex IIC TI-T6 certification, with approval CSA/cUS Class 1 Div 1 expected in February 2013.

Transmitter displays and controls conductivity, resistivity or salinity for process monitoring

The CX-3000 transmitter monitors changes in process fluids, displaying conductivity, resistivity or salinity, along with temperature, for process control in water, chemical, environmental and wastewater applications, and more. A simple push-button interface enables user programming onsite for desired monitoring, with a password-protected option for added security. The dual-output design, with a dedicated (0)4–20mA output for temperature measurement, eliminates the need for a separate temperature transmitter. The CX-3000 transmitter’s large backlit LCD screen displays selected parameter and temperature simultaneously.

High-precision, wide-range temperature and humidity data logger

The wireless data logger RTR-507/507L is a new model in the RTR-500 Series, enabling wide-range high-precision measurements of temperature and humidity. The manufacturer has reportedly achieved a humidity measurement accuracy of ±2.5%, as well as wide-range measurements of temperature from –30ºC to 80°C and humidity from 0% rh to 99% rh.

By using the RTR-500 Series base unit, the recorded data in the RTR-507 can be collected via wireless communication, and can also be used for data monitoring, warning monitoring and data management through networks to construct a data-logging system to match the user’s needs and environment.

The RTR-507’s logging capacity is 8,000 data sets consisting of both temperature and humidity.
