Seeking Refining Excellence: Strategic Weapons for Competitive Advantage
7 December 2016

For refineries to be competitive, they need to have Advanced Process Controllers on all their major process units. In order to be successful with APC, a programmatic approach at implementing unit wide controllers with an  organization to support this investment should be adopted as a best practice.

Achieving Better Product Specs in Existing Naphtha Splitters with GT-DWCSM
17 November 2016

Dividing Wall Column (DWC) technology can produce high purity products within a single column shell with less energy consumption as compared to traditional distillation columns. Case study examples illustrate the advantages of applying DWC technology to revamp a FCC Naphtha Splitter Column at a refinery owned by a major corporation in India.  The pros and cons of the DWC methodology and principles are discussed and compared to other conventional approaches.

Temporary Heat Exchangers Keep Plants Running Profitably
7 November 2016

Heat exchangers are both a vital process component of every refinery and petrochemical plant and a potential limiting factor in a plant’s operations and profitability. Heat exchangers can foul, leak, or corrode. And whether they occur suddenly or develop slowly over time, these problems may force a plant to reduce rates, miss out on potential profit opportunities, and/or exceed permitted environmental limits with the prospect of significant fines. Given that they are usually operating far beyond their design limits, heat exchangers are often a bottleneck to increasing capacity or maintaining product split. This paper demonstrates how temporary heat exchangers can be installed to solve these problems.

Enhancements in Ethylene Oxide/Ethylene Glycol Manufacturing Technology
1 November 2016

The markets for ethylene oxide (EO) and ethylene glycol (EG) continue to see attractive growth. This means that at least one or two new plants will need to be constructed every year if the industry is to meet the forecast demand. To unlock capacity increases economically, new capital-efficient processes, higher-performance catalysts and continuous process optimisation will be paramount. We review these aspects in this paper, beginning with a look at the innovations and technological achievements that got the industry to where it is today.

Wireless Gas Monitoring—The emerging solution for improving plant safety
26 October 2016

Industrial processes that involve toxic and combustible gases can create serious health hazards if the gases escape into the air. To minimize the risk to personnel and plant safety, plants typically rely on wired gas detection systems for early warning. But, these older systems require expensive infrastructure and seldom cover all potential leak areas.

This paper discusses how advances in wireless communications and battery technology have led to gas monitoring that can significantly increase your coverage area and the safety of your workers, gather and report data — all with minimal financial expense.
