2021 IRPC Process: Ethylene/Propylene

During the Wednesday afternoon sessions of Hydrocarbon Processing’s IRPC Process virtual event, Eva Van Dorst, Process Design Engineer EO/EG from Shell, and Rebeca González, Chemicals Licensing Technology Manager from Shell, presented an in-depth session, “Catalytic MEG production—the OMEGA journey so far.”

González opened the joint presentation with an overview of the key differentiators of the company’s OMEGA technology and provided guidelines on economic evaluations of the different technologies for the EO/EG project. Van Dorst followed, providing a deeper dive into the technology aspects and explained the background of the key differentiators introduced by González.

Shell Projects & Technology is a leading EO/EG process licensor, with 99 licenses granted since 1956. The first OMEGA deployment was in 2008, with many iterations since then that responded to market demands, including the company’s first HPEO Only deployment in 2015.

González compared the advantages of the OMEGA vs. MASTER technologies, including energy intensity over time, variable cost comparison and an economic evaluation case study. “Compared with MASTER, OMEGA offers 20% lower steam import, lower overall OPEX, including OMEGA catalyst, lower energy intensity and CO2 footprint, and lower ISBL and OSBL CAPEX,” she said.

“The main difference between the OMEGA vs. MASTER process is in the chemistry that is applied for the conversion of ethylene oxide to ethylene glycol,” Van Dorst opened her portion of the presentation, diving into the general overview provided in the first section. Van Dorst continued to detail the process block schemes of the two processes and well as the other required components.
