Billions of dollars are spent on control system upgrades that often have short payout times. Never the less, just a few days of process unit downtime due to reliability or safety problems can negate the benefits. Thus, improving plant uptime can result in huge savings. Realizing this, most major control system suppliers are expanding their offerings to more easily integrate business and equipment health data with real-time control systems. Asset management is a major thrust of this effort.
