I started working with availability, reliability and maintenance engineering and management in the 1980s. Little was known or published about this side of business operations. Consequently, I set out to develop the field of availability engineering and management as a missing operational discipline of manufacturing plant performance. Out of the silos. Over time, the elements I identified within the discipline began to emerge, but as individual strategies to improve equipment reliability and maintenance. They were silos rather than integrated within a parent dimension of business operations. Even now, few of these best-in-class strategies have climbed out of their silos. Iro
