We talk a lot about "environmental protection" – sometimes, we even do something about it. However, we tend to forget that the adjective environmental means concerning the environment. Consequently, "environmental protection" means not only protecting the environment from us, but also protecting us from the environment. This second aspect is often forgotten. Nobody chains himself or herself to the refinery gate in protest that the refinery is inadequately protected against the environment. Sometimes, they should. Normal conditions. I live in a country that is noted for a harsh wintertime environment. As I write this column, the outside thermometer reads –22
