Twenty-one years ago, one of the world's largest multinational petrochemical companies issued a "Statement on Business Practices." It stipulated that employees could "engage in occasional or part-time gainful activity outside of normal working hours on their own behalf or for others, as long as such activity or occupation does not conflict with the company's interests nor detracts from or impairs the employee's regular job performance in any way."
