Limitations of model predictive controllers Alan Hugo, author, is to be congratulated for his insightful article "Limitations of model predictive controllers," published in the January 2000 issue of Hydrocarbon Processing. I would like to add a few observations of my own. The performance of the MPC algorithm depends not only on the duration of an unmeasured load disturbance, but also on the time lag in its path. Since most refinery loops are lag dominant, there is a long lag in the disturbance path, so even step load changes are not rejected as effectively as by PID control. As the one who gave Ed Bristol's interaction method the name of "Relative Gain Analysis
