David Wyss, Chief Economist for Standard & Poor's, recently provided insight into the outlook for different regional economies. Speaking at the annual ECC Conference, Colorado Springs, Sept. 28 - 29, 2000, he shared an economist's view of how the price of oil and other factors impact future growth. The following is a brief summary of highlights from his talk. U.S. overview. The continuing strong national economy is unexpected and puzzling. The expansion is in a record tenth year, with inflation at a 30-yr low. Unemployment is the lowest since 1970, and consumers are driving the economy. What is driving consumer spending?
