Companies involved in the business of chemistry have a number of reasons or purposes for investing in new plant and equipment. The American Chemistry Council (www.americanchemistry.com) has collected data from its members on distribution of their capital investments by purpose or motivation.
The most recent data indicate that spending to replace worn-out plant and equipment was a major driver in 1999. Table 1 shows a breakout of industry reasons for expenditures over the past several years.
