Worldwide demand for MTBE will reach a peak of more than 520 thousand barrels/day (Mbpd) in 2001, following a decade and a half of extremely rapid growth – averaging more than 10%/yr since 1992. Future prospects have been "dimmed," says a new outlook from DeWitt & Co. (www.dewittworld.com). DeWitt's market researchers do not believe that MTBE will be phased out, even in California, on the target date of January 2003. There is a "small chance" that this will be completed a year later, but it is more likely to take until year-end 2005. MTBE use will continue to grow elsewhere in the world, at least until 2010.
