Fuel-cell-powered vehicle completes endurance trek across the U.S. In early June, DaimlerChrysler achieved a milestone in fuel-cell technology with its NECAR 5. This fuel-cell-powered vehicle completed a 3,000-mi trek across the U.S. Leaving San Francisco on May 20, the NECAR 5 crossed the Sierra Nevada and Rocky mountains en route to Washington, D.C. This demonstration run is the first time that a fuel-cell-powered vehicle traveled an extended distance over various terrains, including long periods of high elevations and temperatures over 90°F. The NECAR 5 is the fifth generation fuel-cell automobile
