Although a small country, Belgium ranks high in the chemical sector. Belgium accounts for 2.7% of the population within the EU; yet, it produces 8.2% of EU chemicals, employs 6.1% of the workforce in chemicals production, holds 14.0% of chemical exports and manages 6.5% of the investment within the chemical industry. Turnover. With a turnover of € 41.9 billion in 2001, the chemical industry is the second largest manufacturing sector in Belgium. It represents nearly a quarter of the turnover generated by the manufacturing sector. The yearly average turnover growth reached 5.6% - a high point over 1988 - 2001 (
