The United Kingdom (UK) is Europe's fourth largest chemical economy, after Germany, France and Italy; it accounts for 11% of the EU's € 519-billion (US$477-billion) overall chemical production and 12.5% of the continent's export sales. In world terms, the UK is ranked seventh (the US, Japan and China holding the top three places), and is the source for about 3% of global chemical production. Domestically, the chemical sector is one of the most important segments of the UK manufacturing industry, accounting for 10% of the nation's manufacturing gross value added and 2% of total UK gross domestic product
