POLES, a computer simulation of the world energy system takes a look at future energy needs and resources. By 2030, world energy consumption will have increased by 70%. More than half the demand will come from developing countries. Industry will account for 35% of demand, transport for 25% and residential and tertiary sectors will make up the rest.
Oil, coal and gas will be the main sources at 34%, 28% and 25%, respectively. The simulation predicts there will be enough reserves of all three to satisfy demand until at least 2030, "though cheap oil will be starting to decline by then," says this analysis. Oil production will rise by 65%, largely from the OPEC countries that will provide 60%
