Enhance control performance I am responding to “ Enhance process control performance,” (October 2003) by C. L. Smith, in particular to the second “Two-tank recycle process” example. This is typical of starting a detailed control design before setting the correct process objectives to begin with. In the two-tank recycle process example, the tanks’ purpose is completely overlooked. What is the need of surge tanks? To provide surge! Therefore, the process objective is to minimize draining at all times by: Start draining only if both tank levels are maximized (i.e., maximum 80% level).
