At 1:20 p.m., March 23, 2005, the BP refinery at Texas City, Texas, experienced one of the worst industrial accidents in recent US history. More than 180 workers were injured, 15 people lost their lives, and financial losses exceeded $1.5 billion. One woman, Eva Rowe, who lost both her parents in the accident, decided to help gain a positive impact from the tragedy by establishing a mechanism to improve safety in the process industry. She wanted a financial settlement made to institutions that educate engineers as well as to a medical facility that helped the burn victims from this accident.
