What are possible hydrogen sources for refinery expansions?

Studying supply options for new refineries or expansions and evaluating possible synergies from 'over-the-fence' supply vs. typical self production

Better refining margins have sparked interest in refinery expansion projects. Many of these plans include conversion projects such as cokers and hydrocrackers. Both processing routes lead to large hydrogen consumption. Refiners have two options on hydrogen supply: self-produce or purchase from a third party. Either decision has benefits as well as disadvantages. This case history discusses the hydrogen optimization studies conducted for the Saras refinery in Sardinia, Italy. The study compares the various options for refinery hydrogen production including recovery from refinery offgas, and production from a gasifier and steam reformer. Background. With current high oil prices and high refi
