We haven't made a survey as to which of the hundreds of "HPIn Reliability" columns published each month over a span of more than 17 years merit being updated. Some are "evergreen," but a few might be candidates for an occasional update. The need to issue an update arose when we were recently appraised of the fact that a Texas-based formulator of synthetic lubricants is now the single-source provider of grease for China's 125-mph (200-km/h) Star Bullet Trains. Prior to switching to this grease, the NSK-brand bearings in the Zhuzhou Electric Locomotives' 1,250-kW traction motors would overheat at 160 km/h. Now, they're reported to run much cooler.
