A mine is often used in gas sweetening to remove acid gases such as: hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS). They can be categorized into three groups: primary, secondary and tertiary.1,2,3,4,5,10 Primary amines react directly with H2S, CO2 and COS. Examples of these used in refineries include monoethanolamine and diglycolamine.1,2,4,10 Secondary amines react directly with H2S and CO2 and with some COS. The most commonly used in refineries is diethanolamine (DEA).1,2,4,5,10 Tertiary amines react directly with H2S, indirectly with CO2 and indirectly with a little COS. The typical tertiary amine used in refineries is methyldiethanolamine (MDEA).5,6,11,13,14
