The optimal blending of crude, gasoline and diesel fuel in refineries continues to be challenging, but the importance of blending is migrating downstream to terminals in the US and will likely increase worldwide as the adoption of renewable fuels accelerates. Final product blending migrates to terminals. In the pre-ethanol era, most of the blending could be accomplished within the refinery walls. However, replacing MTBE with ethanol in the US has spurred the huge demand for blending systems at the local distribution terminal level. The immiscibility of ethanol and gasoline and the corrosiveness of ethanol prohibit blending in the refinery driving it to thousands of local terminals (Table 1)
