A recent HP editorial1 showed the effect of advanced process control (APC) with inferential models on alkylation isostripper iC4 lost to an nC4 side draw (Fig. 1). From trend data for the two periods in Fig. 2, the wide variation for 5/18/07 to 6/7/07 is 3 to 35 about mean 10% and the narrow variation for 6/7/07 to 7/17/07 is 0 to 4 about mean 2%. Friedman claims "alkylation APC is lucrative," so the next step is to assess the economic significance by aligning the mean setpoint to economics.2–6
