Low carbon dioxide (CO2) in a cycle gas loop of an ethylene glycol (EG) plant improves catalyst selectivity and overall plant economics. CO2 produced as a byproduct in an ethylene oxide (EO) reactor is removed by a recycle gas purification process. In this process, the carbonate and bicarbonate ratio in lean carbonate solution is considered as an important quality control (QC) variable since it largely depends on CO2 removal efficiency. If there is a process malfunction or if operating in less than optimal conditions, the CO2 content in a cycle gas loop will continue to rise until corrective action is taken.
