Project Management: Estimate skid and package dimensions

In the absence of vendor quotations or detailed engineering, preliminary dimensions of skids or packages can be estimated quickly using the ratio method.

Abid, J., Engineering Consultant

In the absence of vendor quotations or detailed engineering, preliminary dimensions of skids or packages can be estimated quickly using the ratio method. This method is particularly useful for operators, which traditionally have a limited database compared to contractors. To overcome this challenge, operators have created, maintained and organized a dimensional database of existing process equipment and skids. FIG. 1. Typical inlet manifold. The overall dimensions of a skid are related to key parameters, such as diameter and length of pressure vessel, highest flange rating, outer diameter (OD) of pipe, and the number of slots or parallel runs.
