Engineers often uncover problems or inadequacies with pressure relief valve (PRV) and relief system piping capacities that need creative and cost-effective solutions. These problems may surface in a number of ways. For example, when attempting to close a hazardous operations (HAZOP) recommendation, it may be discovered that the PRV capacity is inadequate. A debottlenecking study may reveal that a PRV is too small or that backpressure is excessive.
