Gas blast at Curacao refinery injures workers

A gas-plant explosion at the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA’s Curacao refinery resulted in injuries to three refinery workers.
The 335-Mbpd Isla refinery is located on an island. The cause for the explosion is unknown along with the true impact on the accident on the Curacao refinery’s daily operations.
This refinery provides refined products to the US, Central America and the Caribbean markets.
The incident took place as workers were preparing to carry out planned maintenance at a butane unit, PDVSA said according to news agency Reuters. The company noted that two contractors and a refinery fireman suffered burns.
Sources indicate that the refinery had been operating at low utilization rates due insufficient power and other resources and services.
The Curacao’s accident follows another supply interruption in PDVSA’s refining network. The 645-Mbpd Amuay refinery was shut down due to a blackout over six days ago.
That refinery is said to be in the process of restarting operations soon.
