I recently attended a three-day meeting that took place in a "luxury conference center ... with outstanding views over the city of O***." A single room cost about $300 a night. I was quite looking forward to it: three days of being pampered and cosseted, exotic dinners, big breakfasts, mints on the pillow, a well-stocked bar, maybe a little après-ski... In the event, my expectations were dashed: everything was self-service; the menu was the same every day; the bar prices equated glasses with bottles; there wasn't enough snow; and I could not out stand enough to see the outstanding view behind the trees.
