A recent survey of laboratory information management system (LIMS) users in Europe asked LIMS managers to give their insights and experiences. Researchers from a market research firm asked respondents to indicate which operating system they used with their LIMS. Open VMS and Windows are the most popular operating systems. Four years ago, Open VMS was used by almost 50% of the respondents, but in 1998 only 34% are using this operating system (Fig. 2). Windows usage has increased dramatically during this time and has replaced MS-DOS. Microsoft software is now used in 40% of the labs, an increase from its previous 28% share.
