Demand for thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) in the U.S. is forecast to increase 6.7%/yr to 1.4 billion pounds in 2003. This is a significant outpacing of gains in the general economy. Market research from the Freedonia Group, Cleveland, Ohio, forecasts that "despite strong volume gains, overall pricing for TPEs will be sluggish." The average price per pound is projected to rise 2%/yr - $2.40 in 2003, a $3.3-billion market value. Most of the U.S. TPE industry's historical growth arose from the displacement of natural and synthetic rubber, due primarily to TPE's many superior performance characteristics.
