The final parts have passed! IEC 61508 is an international standard, titled: "Functional safety of electrical / electronic / programmable electronic safety-related systems." This new standard has seven parts. Parts 1,3,4 and 5 were passed in 1998. Part 7 passed in January 2000 and the final parts, 2 and 6, passed in February 2000. All seven parts are now official. So what? This standard will have a significant impact in the hydrocarbon processing industry. The standard is clearly aimed at automation systems designed to protect industrial processes from potentially dangerous conditions. It is called an "umbrella" standard
