Organizations that manufacture MTBE or supply this industry must truly believe that there are monsters everywhere. MTBE, a petrochemical with firm ties to the methanol industry, has many opponents. Yet, this ether holds a pivotal point in the U.S. gasoline supply. As the refining industry approaches a new year, the fate of MTBE as a blending component remains controversial and undecided. Politics not science. In the U. S., politics not science will determine MTBE's final fate. Yet, the pro-MTBE camp has been successful in supplying enough facts and figures to shed doubt on a complete ban for MTBE. The U.S. DOE forecasts a dramatic impact to supply and gasoline costs with MTBE removal.1 F
