Light olefins – ethylene, propylene and butylenes – are the basic building blocks in the manufacture of various petrochemical products and fuels. Presently, light olefins are used to manufacture, polymers, antifreezes, petrochemicals, gasoline, explosives, solvents, medicinals, fumigants, resins, synthetic rubber and many other products. Ethylene is the largest volume petrochemical feedstock, and virtually all of the ethylene supply comes from thermal (steam) cracking of hydrocarbon feedstocks such as ethane, propane, naphthas and gasoils.
