Control iron contamination in resid FCC

With new techniques, refiners can detect and recover from this poisoning

Iron-related poisoning of resid FCC catalyst is a phenomenon that was first recognized during the 1990s.1,2 In resid fluidized catalytic cracking units (RFCCUs) the effects of iron can include, among other things, a drop in conversion and an increase in slurry yield. The yield loss, caused by iron, can be extreme, with a loss of around 10% conversion in severe cases. The incidence of iron poisoning is becoming more frequent and may be due to changes in RFCCU operation and feeds. It may simply reflect the greater awareness of iron poisoning by refiners and wider identification of this problem. The presented case histories show how to identify iron poisoning in a resid FCC unit
