Gas-to-liquids (GTL) has now become the most talked
about petroleum process that has failed to materialize on a
massive scale: only 40,000 b/d of capacity is presently
onstream worldwide.
However, most industry pundits are still optimistic
about GTL's future chances and keep predicting a "take-off"
for the next decade - as they have for every single year
since 1997.
During 2002, there were no signs of a take-off. The
basic problem seems to be that there are too many hurdles in
the technology's way,1 and the rising cost of
natural gas is the latest addition to an already long list of
challenges.
