In 2002, the French chemical industry was burdened by the worldwide economic slowdown. Production volume increased 1.1% - as compared to the 2.4% expansion in 2001 (Fig. 1). Chemicals, without pharmaceuticals, showed some positive signs during the first half of the year, in response to restocking. But the weak demand resulted in a total production decrease of 0.9% in 2002. Basic chemicals attempted to recover from the negative figures of 2001; even specialty chemicals experienced volume decreases for the first time.
